Exercise To Optimise Cancer Treatment Outcomes

Exercise for general health and fitness has been recommended for many years. Recent high quality research has reported on the beneficial role of exercise in  management of all cancers. Exercise has been shown to improve quality of life during treatment, improve recovery from treatment and also lower the risk of secondary cancer occurring.

The Clinical Oncology Society of Australia (COSA), along with 25 other cancer organisations are calling for exercise to be prescribed to all cancer patients as part of routine cancer care.    COSA’s position on exercise in cancer care follows that all people with cancer should avoid inactivity and should progress towards achieving 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise per week and 2-3 resistance exercise sessions per week.  It is noted that exercise recommendations should be tailored to the individual’s abilities and specific exercise programming adaptations may be required.    They conclude that best practice cancer care should include a referral to an accredited Physiotherapist or Exercise Physiologist with experience in cancer care for exercise prescription.

At Fitwise Physiotherapy we are lucky to have Dennise Smith, a Certified PINC Cancer Rehabilitation Physiotherapist.  She advocates that rehabilitation is an extremely important part of cancer care. In order to obtain the best outcome from cancer treatment both high quality medical treatment and  physical rehabilitation are essential.

PINC Cancer Rehabilitation Physiotherapist’s understand that one size does not fit all.   Every single person’s cancer is different, even those diagnosed as the same type and stage.  People respond very differently to treatment and need individualised rehabilitation in order to achieve their goals.

All cancer treatments have an impact on the body and our role as Physiotherapists is to prescribe appropriate exercise to help manage the side effects of treatment and maximise recovery.

If you are undergoing cancer treatment currently or have had treatment in the past, exercise is essential to maximise your health outcomes. If you are not currently achieving the recommended 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise along with 2-3 resistance exercise sessions, let Dennise, our PINC Cancer Rehabilitation Physiotherapist get you started with exercise so that you can see the benefits for both your body and mind.
