Whenever I am asked the question “what do you do for a living?”, I often have to plan my response carefully and not simply reply with “I am an Osteopath”. More often than not, I get met with a perplexed facial expression, and an invitation to elaborate. In my early days in my career I would often provide a simple correlation along the lines of “I am a manual therapist – much like a physiotherapist or chiropractor”. But the more I think about it, the more I am underselling our profession: an Osteopath is far more than a manual therapist!

We love providing help to our community in Ocean Grove and the Bellarine Peninsula. It is a spectacular coastal community and today, I thought I would provide a more detailed explanation around what Osteopaths do and why we undergo five years of university training to become Osteopaths. We want to spread the word about Osteopathy in Ocean Grove!

The term “Osteo” anatomically refers to bone, and the term Osteopath translates directly to “responding to/sensitive to bone”. The reality is, Osteopaths maintain a cohesive amount of knowledge regarding all things musculoskeletal within the body not just bones. Our training covers the treatment and diagnosis of conditions of bones, joints, muscles, ligaments, tendons, nervous systems and more.

Osteopaths work with a very hands on approach and are trained to assess for function as well as structure. This often means we will scan various regions of the body that you may not expect to be related to your presenting problem. Above all though, our primary aim is identify the root cause of your problem, and to keep your body mobile as possible. We want to keep you moving.

“So why would I see an Osteopath?” This is a common dinner party question I hear, and to put some context to what we can do for you, Osteopaths can treat a variety of musculoskeletal issues including, but not limited to:

  • Lower back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Upper back and shoulder tightness
  • Headaches
  • Sport related strains
  • Overuse injuries (tennis elbow, golfers elbow)

In addition to all things musculoskeletal, we are also trained to consider other lifestyle factors and variables when regarding an individual’s health. Your Osteopath will ask a detailed history including questioning about your social environment, psychological state and genetics. We are looking for any factors which may change our prognosis, or affect your healing capacity. For example, long term states of stress can significantly hinder connective tissue growth and repair, so looking for ways to aid with factors such as stress can be just as important as our hands on treatment. To summarise, Osteopaths treat the body “holistically”.

But as much as we try, Osteopaths can’t solve everything. We understand our limitations and see the benefit in working together as an allied health team towards your health. At Beyond, we pride ourselves on our ability to work as a team, and we will be incorporating other health professions in your treatment plan to ensure you get the optimal client care. These modalities include rehab specialists such as physiotherapists or exercise physiologists, and myotherapists.

Our Osteopaths at Ocean Grove include Catherine Allison, Erin Coffey, Sandy Stewart, Candice Tandy and myself. Although we all share the same fundamental training, we never stop learning

and each continue to further our knowledge every year. As a result, each of us have developed particular areas of interest when treating the body and thrive on helping people with such conditions.

I personally enjoy treating hip and pelvic conditions and tendinopathies such as tennis elbow. I also have an interest in treating injuries related to team sports or outdoor activities. So if there’s any way I can help you get back to what you love doing, I’d love to be involved.
