Pessary fittings in East Melbourne

What is a Pessary and Why Would You Need One?

A pessary is a small, removable medical device designed to support your pelvic organs and reduce symptoms caused by pelvic organ prolapse. Think of it as a gentle scaffold for your pelvic organs, providing relief from prolapse symptoms, such as feelings of pressure, bulging, or heaviness. Made from soft, medical-grade silicone, pessaries come in various shapes and sizes because every woman’s anatomy is unique. They can be used all the time or just during activities like exercise or gardening.

Pessaries are a suitable option for the management of prolapse symptoms for many women. Your pelvic health physiotherapist or health care provider can discuss this with you.

The Pessary Fitting Process at Beyond East Melbourne

At Beyond East Melbourne, we take a personalised approach to ensure your pessary is fitted comfortably and effectively. Please note our Pessary fitting appointments are on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Step 1: Initial Consultation

Your journey starts with a Pelvic Floor consultation. During this session, we assess your individual needs and determine if a pessary is the right solution for your condition. We’ll provide detailed information about pessaries, including their benefits and how they work. Before proceeding with a fitting, medical clearance from your GP is required. Don’t worry – we’ll guide you through this process and can assist in discussing your care with your GP.

Step 2: The Pessary Fitting Appointment

The fitting process is a 60-minute appointment with one of our highly trained Women’s, Men’s & Pelvic Health Physiotherapists. During this session, we’ll determine the best type, size, and shape of pessary for your unique needs. Depending on the type of pessary, we’ll teach you how to insert, remove, and care for it, equipping you with the confidence to manage it on your own if needed.

Step 3: Ongoing Care

Follow-up appointments are essential to ensure the pessary continues to work effectively and safely for you. Some clients may need a few fittings to find the perfect pessary, as it’s a process of trial and adjustment. These follow-ups allow us to make necessary adjustments and ensure your pessary provides the long-term support you need.

At Beyond East Melbourne, we’re here to guide you every step of the way, ensuring you feel supported and empowered throughout the process.

FAQs

Who is a pessary suitable for?

Most women with pelvic organ prolapse can use a pessary, but certain conditions like infections, untreated vaginal dryness, or previous pelvic surgery may require specialist advice.

Does a pessary fitting hurt?

Fittings might feel a little uncomfortable, but discomfort should disappear within 24 hours. If it persists, we’ll reassess the size or type.

Can I have intercourse with a pessary?

Some pessaries can remain in place during intercourse, while others may need to be removed. We’ll discuss your preferences during your fitting.

What type of follow up pessary fitting appointments do I need?

Regular check-ups every 3-12 months (depending on your type of pessary and management) are crucial to ensure the pessary is safe, effective, and working as intended. In fact, it is part of your ‘pessary’ agreement to attend follow-up sessions as it is a matter of health and safety to have your pessary reviewed. But don’t stress- we will help you remember when you are due an appointment.

Do you offer rebates?

We accept DVA, TAC, Work Cover, and EPC Medicare programs plus Private Health rebates are available.

You can claim Private Health and Medicare rebate on the day of your appointment if required.

When are you open?

We are open Monday-Friday and have plenty of after hours appointments for your convenience. Please note your appointment must be booked with a Pelvic health physio who has further qualifications in pessary fitting.

Payment

We are a cashless business, payment may be made via credit card (Visa & Master Card). We do not normally offer credit on account payment. HICAPS facilities are available for private health insurance claims. Patients may be eligible for a rebate from Medicare under the Chronic Disease Management (CDM), however this must be in place and initiated by a GP before treatment commences.
