Motivation Monday: Vitamin D And Pregnancy

As it feels like summer is a distant memory, let’s take sometime on this freezing Monday morning to talk about a long-lost friend, Vitamin D.

  • Vitamin D is a micronutrient that helps maintain adequate levels of calcium and phosphate – 2 essential minerals that help build muscle and bone strength in the developing foetus.
  • Research has shown that Vitamin D deficiency in pregnant women may increase the risk of preeclampsia, low birth weight and gestational diabetes. Further to this, the research also suggests that children whose mothers were Vitamin D deficient in late pregnancy had a reduced bone size and bone mineral content. The non-pregnant woman requires 250IU/day of Vitamin D. This requirement rises to 400-600IU/day for pregnant women.

Whether you are planning a pregnancy, pregnant, or simply missing the warmer weather, what can you do to maintain adequate Vitamin D levels?

  • In Australia, fortified margarine appears to be the major dietary source of vitamin D, together with fatty fish such as salmon, herring and mackerel, and eggs. Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to obtain sufficient vitamin D from the diet alone.
  • Vitamin D status is generally maintained by exposure to sunlight, however during the winter months this canbe problematic. During winter, often longer sun exposure times are needed, preferably around midday.
