Have you ever tried Pilates style of exercise? Our boutique clinic is an Allied Health Practitioner lead Clinical Pilates studio, located in Main St Blackburn. We work with you to achieve your individual goals whether that is improving strength, stability, reducing injury, or increasing flexibility, we are here for you!

Our Physiotherapists, Osteopaths, Myotherapists and Exercise Physiologists take small group classes in our beautiful light filled movement studio. We utilise pilates equipment to deliver the goals you set with your practitioner.

Prior to starting classes you need to have an initial assessment where you practitioner will assess your strength and movement. They will identify areas of strength, weakness and how to shape your program to match the goals you set together. You may need more than one individual session with your practitioner prior to joining the classes. We recommend booking weekly classes to get the best results!

FAQs

What is the difference between Clinical Pilates and regular Pilates?

Clinical Pilates is a therapeutic form of Pilates designed and supervised by qualified allied health practitioners (physiotherapists, exercise physiologists, or osteopaths) rather than fitness instructors. Every program at Move Beyond Blackburn begins with a full clinical assessment, so your exercises are prescribed specifically for your body, your injury history, and your goals. Regular studio Pilates uses a generalised class program; Clinical Pilates is individualised from the first session.

Do I need a referral to start Clinical Pilates in Blackburn?

No referral is required to book Clinical Pilates at our Blackburn clinic. You can book directly online or by phone. A referral from your GP is only needed if you want to access Medicare rebates through a Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan, which your GP arranges if you have a chronic condition. Private health insurance, NDIS, WorkCover, DVA, and TAC can all be used without a referral.

What happens at my Clinical Pilates assessment?

Before joining any classes, every client completes a one-on-one initial assessment with their practitioner. This typically runs for 60 minutes and involves a thorough review of your health history, goals, and movement patterns. Your practitioner will identify areas of strength, weakness, and restriction and use this to build a personalised program. Depending on your needs, you may have one or more individual sessions before transitioning into small group classes.

How small are the Clinical Pilates classes in Blackburn?

Our Clinical Pilates classes at Blackburn are small group, typically a maximum of 4 participants, allowing your practitioner to closely supervise and adjust your exercises in real time. This is very different from large commercial Pilates studios, and it's what allows us to deliver genuinely therapeutic outcomes rather than a general fitness experience.

What equipment do you use in Clinical Pilates?

Our Blackburn studio uses a full range of Pilates equipment including the reformer, trapeze table, Wunda chair, spine corrector, and mat-based equipment. Your practitioner will determine which equipment is appropriate for your program based on your assessment findings and goals.

Is Clinical Pilates suitable for people with injuries or chronic pain?

Yes. Clinical Pilates is particularly well suited to people managing injuries, chronic pain, or complex movement conditions. Because every program is individually designed and supervised by a clinician, exercises can be modified continuously as your capacity changes. It is commonly used at our Blackburn clinic for lower back pain, pelvic floor dysfunction, pre and postnatal conditions, postural issues, arthritis, neurological conditions, and post-surgical recovery.

Can I do Clinical Pilates if I'm pregnant or recently had a baby?

Yes. Clinical Pilates can be safely adapted throughout pregnancy and the postnatal period, under the guidance of your practitioner. We work with your changing body at every stage, from managing pelvic girdle pain and lower back pain during pregnancy, to rebuilding core strength and addressing diastasis recti after birth. Please let us know when booking so we can match you with the right practitioner.

How is Clinical Pilates different from Exercise Physiology or physiotherapy sessions?

Clinical Pilates uses Pilates-based equipment and methodology as the primary treatment tool, within a small group setting. Physiotherapy and Exercise Physiology sessions are individual one-on-one appointments that may involve manual therapy, exercise prescription, or other treatment approaches. Many of our Blackburn clients use Clinical Pilates alongside their individual sessions, as it can be a great way to progress your rehabilitation in a more structured, ongoing movement context. Your practitioner can help you decide which combination makes most sense for your situation.

How often should I attend Clinical Pilates classes?

We recommend attending at least once per week to see meaningful progress, and twice per week where possible. Consistency is key as Pilates-based rehabilitation builds on itself progressively, and irregular attendance makes it difficult to advance your program safely.

Is Clinical Pilates covered by private health insurance or Medicare?

Private health insurance with extras cover typically includes Clinical Pilates when delivered by a registered physiotherapist or exercise physiologist. You can claim on the day using our on-site HICAPS terminal. Medicare rebates may be available under a Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan arranged by your GP. DVA, WorkCover, and TAC are also accepted. We are a cashless practice, payment via Visa or Mastercard.

What should I wear to Clinical Pilates?

Comfortable, form-fitting athletic wear works best as loose clothing can get caught in reformer springs or make it harder for your practitioner to observe your movement. Grip socks are recommended and available to purchase at the clinic if needed. No shoes are worn in the studio.
