World Continence Week - Incontinence At Any Age
21 June 2019•2 min read
It’s word continence week!
The aim of this week is to raise awareness and remove the stigma around incontinence. A new report on ‘Continence Health in Australia’, released by the Continence Foundation of Australia shows that incontinence now affects more than 1 in 3 Australians (38%). We have included the full report at the bottom of this blog post if you’d like to read more.
Accidentally leaking urine, losing control of your bowels or breaking wind without meaning to is common, but not normal. We call this incontinence.
Incontinence can happen for many reasons, such as:
Weak pelvic floor: If you have weak pelvic floor muscles, you may find it hard to close the bladder and stop the flow of urine.
Overactive pelvic floor/tight pelvic floor muscles: If you have tight pelvic floor muscles, which we refer to as an ‘overactive pelvic floor’, the muscles can fatigue therefore weaken, which can then cause continence issues.
Pregnancy and childbirth: Pregnancy, hormonal changes, weight gain and delivery can all contribute to incontinence. 1 in 3 women who have a baby leak urine.
High impact sport and incorrect abdominal exercise: 25% of women, aged 20-25 experience urinary leakage while exercising. When participating in sport or any form of physical activity, it’s important to protect your pelvic floor.
Getting older: Hormonal and muscle changes as you age may weaken pelvic floor muscles.
Prostate problems: After prostate surgery, the muscles are weaker. You may find it hard to stop or control urine.
The good news, there are many things you can do to improve or manage incontinence, including prescribed pelvic floor exercises by your Physiotherapist.
It’s important to remember, you don’t need to have a concern before you start working on your pelvic floor, preventive measures such as education on how you can protect and strengthen your pelvic floor is beneficial at any stage of life. Our Physiotherapists work with clients of all ages on pelvic floor care.
