Onero TM in Kensington

Onero™ is a clinically researched resistance and impact training program built specifically to strengthen bone and reduce fracture risk. Developed through research at the University of Newcastle, it uses targeted loading patterns focused on the hips and lower back, the areas where bone health matters most.

At Move Beyond Kensington, Onero™ classes are run by our Onero-trained Exercise Physiologists in a small group setting, so every session is closely supervised and can be adjusted to where you're at.

Who is Onero for?

- People at risk of poor bone health, including those with a family history of osteopenia or osteoporosis, low weight-bearing activity levels, or long-term corticosteroid use

- Perimenopausal and menopausal women, given the hormonal impact on bone density

- Anyone already diagnosed with osteopenia or osteoporosis wanting to improve bone density, strength and balance

- Anyone who wants to start lifting weights properly, in a small group, under expert supervision

If you're not sure whether Onero is the right fit, book an initial assessment and we'll help you work that out.

What involved

The program starts with a comprehensive 60 minute assessment with a qualified Onero-trained practitioner. From there, you'll attend two 60 minute classes per week, capped at a small group size so every participant gets proper attention and adjustment. Onero runs over 12 months, with intensity and complexity progressing as your strength, balance and confidence build.

You can find current class times on the Kensington timetable, and we're regularly adding sessions, so let us know if a time doesn't currently suit and we'll see what we can do.

FAQs

What makes Onero different from general strength training?

Onero follows a specific, clinically researched protocol designed around bone loading, not general fitness goals. It's delivered only by Onero-accredited practitioners, which our Kensington Exercise Physiology team are.

Is Onero safe if I already have osteoporosis or a history of fractures?

Yes, Onero was designed specifically for this. Every participant is assessed individually before starting, and your program is built around your bone density, fracture history and current strength and balance.

Do I need a recent DEXA scan to start?

It's not required to begin, but a recent scan helps us tailor your program more precisely. We'll talk through this at your initial assessment and can discuss a GP referral if needed.

How long until I see results?

Onero is a 12 month program, which reflects how long meaningful bone density change genuinely takes. Most people notice improvements in strength, balance and confidence well before that point.

Is Onero only for women?

No. Men can and do develop osteoporosis and osteopenia, particularly with risk factors like corticosteroid use, smoking or family history. Onero at Kensington is open to anyone at risk of poor bone health.

Is Onero covered by Medicare or private health insurance?

Medicare rebates may apply under a GP-arranged Chronic Disease Management plan. Most private health extras policies covering Exercise Physiology or Physiotherapy include Onero, and you can claim on the day via HICAPS.

What should I wear to my first session?

Comfortable, supportive athletic clothing and closed shoes suitable for resistance and impact-based work. Bring any recent DEXA results or GP referral if you have them.

Can I do Onero alongside physiotherapy or osteopathy?

Yes, many of our Kensington clients combine Onero with other services. Let your practitioner know what else you're doing so your care can be coordinated.
